About this guide

Visit Mount Cook is an independent travel guide to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin around Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Twizel. It is written by Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany.

Not an official site

This guide has no connection to the Department of Conservation, the Mackenzie District Council or any tour operator. Two bodies have the last word on the area. The Department of Conservation (Te Papa Atawhai) manages the national park and runs the visitor centre at 1 Larch Grove in Mount Cook Village, where entry is free and climbers and trampers can record their intentions. Its pages at doc.govt.nz list track closures, hut bookings and safety warnings. The regional tourism service is Mackenzie Region at mackenzienz.com, provided by the Mackenzie District Council in Fairlie.

If a track status, a road closure on State Highway 80 or a hut booking matters for your plans, check it there before you set off.

Where the facts come from

Distances, walking times, opening hours, climate figures and sun times on this site come from published sources: the Department of Conservation, Mackenzie Region, Tourism New Zealand, NIWA climate records, the University of Otago and the University of Canterbury, Heritage New Zealand, DarkSky International and the US Naval Observatory for sunrise and twilight. Where we worked something out ourselves, such as driving distances from OpenStreetMap routing, the page says "about" or "roughly". Each page lists its sources, all checked in October 2026.

Sources sometimes disagree. Driving times from Queenstown are a good example, with published figures between about three and five hours. In such cases we give the range or leave the number out.

How tours are picked

A tour appears here when it starts in or near Mount Cook Village, Glentanner, Twizel or Lake Tekapo and fits the subject of the page. Flights that also cross to the West Coast are included only when they take off on this side of the Alps. Duration, meeting point, age limits and what is included are taken from the tour pages. Where reviewers keep mentioning the same weak point, such as weather cancellations or a middle seat in the helicopter, the page says so. When the booking platform stops listing a tour, it disappears from the site automatically.

How the site is paid for

Tour cards and comparison tables link to GetYourGuide and, for tours not listed there, to Viator. If you book through one of these links, we receive a commission and your price stays the same. Prices and ratings are loaded from the platform; we do not write or change them.

We are not a tour operator and do not take bookings. Questions about a booking go to the platform or to the operator named on it.
