Mount Cook Village lies inside Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, in the Southern Alps north of Lake Pukaki. It sits at the end of State Highway 80, which branches off State Highway 8 at Lake Pukaki, so everyone arrives and leaves by the same road. Most visitors drive, and the rest come by bus, shuttle or on a day tour.

Flying in

Visitors from overseas usually land at Christchurch or Queenstown. Christchurch Airport handled 6.25 million passengers in the 2024 financial year and has more than 140 international arrivals and departures a week. Queenstown Airport passed one million international passenger movements for the first time in the 2026 financial year, with year-round flights to Brisbane among its routes. Both work as a starting point: from Christchurch the drive runs through Lake Tekapo, from Queenstown over Lindis Pass.

Mount Cook Airport, about 5 km down the valley from the village, is where many of the ski plane and helicopter flights take off. The scenic flights page covers them.

Driving from Christchurch

From Christchurch Airport the drive is about 324 km. The Hermitage, the hotel in the village, tells guests to allow 4 hours 15 minutes, and Tourism New Zealand gives a similar 4 hours 10. The route passes Lake Tekapo, 104 km before the village, which makes a natural stop for a break or a night.

Driving from Queenstown

Queenstown is closer, at about 258 km, but the sources disagree on how long it takes. Our own route calculation shows about 3 hours 20 minutes without stops, the Hermitage allows 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 30, and Tourism New Zealand plans for 5 hours. The difference is mostly breaks: Lindis Pass, Omarama and the lookouts over Lake Pukaki all invite a stop. Twizel, 65 km before the village, has the nearest shop. From Wānaka the drive is about 207 km.

On the road

New Zealand drives on the left. A current licence from home is valid for up to 18 months, and a licence that is not in English needs an accurate English translation or an International Driving Permit carried with it. Tourism New Zealand points out that many roads are hilly, narrow and winding, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests.

In winter DOC warns that snow can close State Highway 80, so check the highway conditions before you set off. Fuel is the other thing to sort out in advance. The village has a single self-service pump that takes cards only, and the Hermitage recommends filling up before you arrive. There are no shops in the village; the nearest is in Twizel, 66 km away, and the nearest pharmacy is about 70 km away according to Alpine Guides.

By bus and shuttle

InterCity runs daily buses between Mount Cook and Christchurch, which take about 4 hours 55 minutes and use the Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street in Christchurch. A daily service to Queenstown takes about four hours and ends at the car park on Athol Street. In the village, both leave from the Aoraki Lobby of the Hermitage Hotel.

Smaller operators fill the gaps. Alpine Guides lists the Cook Connection shuttle from Twizel, booked through Cycle Journeys, and Cheeky Kiwi Travel with direct shuttles from Christchurch and Queenstown. Tekapo Shuttle connects Lake Tekapo with the village and also offers transfers to the Tasman Glacier and the Hooker Valley Track. Timetables change with the season, so check them with the operators.

Day trips from Queenstown

For a visit without an overnight stay, small-group tours leave Queenstown at 6:30 am for a round trip of 12 to 13 hours. The route follows the Kawarau Gorge, Cromwell, Lindis Pass and Omarama to Lake Pukaki, and gives about three hours of free time at Mount Cook. Groups are limited to 15 people. Walks are on your own and lunch is not included. One version is built around the Hooker Valley Track and warns that a lot of walking is involved; the other leaves the three hours open.

Three hours is enough for the Hooker Valley walk, which DOC times at three hours return. It leaves no room for a scenic flight or a second track, and the rest of the day is spent on the road. If you have more time, staying a night in the village or in Twizel or Tekapo pays off.

A shuttle day from Lake Tekapo

From Lake Tekapo, Tekapo Shuttle runs a day tour all year. It leaves the Four Square car park at 8:00 from September to May and at 8:30 from June to August, stops at Peter's Lookout and the Tasman Glacier tracks, and gives you time for the Hooker Valley Track before returning around 16:30 to 17:00. Bring your own lunch; snow spikes are supplied when the track is snowy. Reviews point out that the Hooker track is sometimes closed after storms, and that drivers with their own car can do the same walks on their own. For moving around once you are there, see getting around.

Before you fly to New Zealand

Many visitors need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they travel, including citizens of Germany and Switzerland for stays of up to three months; check the conditions for your passport with Immigration New Zealand. All air passengers also complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which is free and can be submitted from 24 hours before the journey or on arrival. Certain foods, plant and animal products and used outdoor equipment are restricted, so clean your hiking boots before packing them. The itineraries page suggests how many nights to plan once you arrive.
