Scenic flights at Aoraki/Mount Cook

Most flights leave from Mount Cook Airport, a few minutes before the village, and spend 25 to 55 minutes in the air. The landing on snow is what separates them, along with the choice between helicopter and ski plane.

Nearly every scenic flight in the national park takes off from Mount Cook Airport, a small airfield on State Highway 80 about 5 kilometres before the village. The Helicopter Line flies from Glentanner Park instead, a 20-minute drive back down the valley, and offers free transport from the village. On the far side of the Mackenzie Basin, Air Safaris uses the airfield at Lake Tekapo, while Mackenzie Helicopters has a base just south of that town.

Time in the air ranges from 25 to 55 minutes. Most flights put down somewhere high above the valley for 10 to 15 minutes, which is the part guests remember: you step out onto snow with Aoraki in front of you. Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure at Mount Cook Ski Planes and Helicopters and 30 minutes before at Glacier Helicopters, so the whole outing takes longer than the flight time suggests.

Helicopter, ski plane or one of each

A helicopter can land on a small ridge or snowfield, so the short flights choose a site facing the main peaks. The 25-minute flight by Mount Cook Ski Planes and Helicopters follows the Tasman Valley, passes a glacier lake and lands among the mountains; the operator names Brass Peak or Liebig Dome as landing sites. Glacier Helicopters, at 81 Bowen Drive in the village, flies a 30-minute route over the lower Tasman Glacier and the Liebig Range.

The ski plane lands on the upper Tasman Glacier itself. It has nine seats, and a flight only goes ahead with at least four passengers. The combination flight sends you up in one aircraft and back in the other, after a landing on the upper glacier. Its route takes in the Hochstetter Icefall, the Tasman Terminal Lake, the Grand Plateau and Plateau Hut. On this flight the operator asks for each passenger’s full name and weight at booking.

Glacier routes and the loop to the West Coast

The 40-minute flights concentrate on the Tasman Glacier. Southern Lakes Helicopters flies its full length and lands on the snow, and the pilot may switch off the engine during the stop. Glacier Helicopters takes in the Hochstetter Icefall and the upper glacier, with check-in at its village base and a transfer to the airport. A 30-minute Southern Lakes flight goes past the Tasman Terminal Lake, where icebergs float in the meltwater, before its mountain landing. That lake did not exist until 1974 and grows as the glacier retreats.

The longest flights cross the Main Divide to the West Coast and show the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers from above. The 55-minute grand circle by Mount Cook Ski Planes and Helicopters also follows the coast north along the Tasman Sea before returning over the Grand Plateau. The tour pages disagree on whether it includes a landing, so read the details before you book. The 50-minute flight by Glacier Helicopters lands on the Tasman Glacier before heading west. So does the 55-minute flight by The Helicopter Line, which takes at most six passengers.

From Glentanner and Lake Tekapo

Glentanner Park lies further down the valley. From there the 25-minute Alpine Vista crosses Lake Pukaki and the Ben Ohau Range to a landing for about 10 minutes. The 35-minute Alpine Explorer stays over the Ben Ohau Range, where the operator describes snow-covered tops in the winter months from May to September. The 40-minute Mountains High flight reaches the upper Tasman Glacier and returns over the Burnett Mountains, with a landing that depends on snow levels.

From Lake Tekapo the Air Safaris plane flies 50 minutes over the glacier lakes, past Aoraki and the Tasman Glacier and on to the West Coast. It does not land, and every passenger gets a window seat, with a printed flight guide in English, Korean, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. Reviews mention the wings in many photos and commentary that is hard to hear over the engine. Mackenzie Helicopters runs a 25-minute private flight over the lake and the high-country stations to a landing site in the hills, with snow underfoot in winter. Between November and January the same company flies over the lupin fields and lands in a paddock for photos.

Seats, weight and what you can take

Seating matters more than the aircraft. Reviews of several flights describe the middle seat in the back row of a helicopter as the one with the poorest view, and on the combination flight guests noticed that passengers kept the same side on the return. One reviewer recommends checking in early for a better chance of a front seat.

Several flights do not accept passengers over 115 kg; the Tekapo plane sets its limit at 130 kg. Bags, drones and selfie sticks are not allowed on several flights. For families, Glacier Helicopters is the clearest: children from 4 to 14 need their own seat, and infants under 4 and under 15 kg sit on an adult’s lap.

Weather and the time of year

Mount Cook Village is wet. NIWA records more than 4,000 mm of rain a year there, spread over about 14 rain days in every month, while Lake Tekapo gets roughly an eighth of that. Low cloud and wind ground the aircraft, and the reviews show the result: waits of a day or two, a ski plane flight without the landing, or a switch to the short helicopter flight. All the flights here can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours ahead, and a weather cancellation by the operator brings a new slot or a refund. Plan your flight for the first clear morning of your stay rather than the last.

Flights run all year. The high peaks keep snow and ice in every season, but some lower landing sites turn to rock in summer, and one summer reviewer landed nowhere near snow. In winter the snow line drops and the days shorten: on 21 June the sun rises at 08:14 in the village and sets at 17:09, flat horizon assumed, and the valley walls cut that further. UV is strong all year on snow and ice, so take sunglasses even on a grey day. Our pages on weather and what to wear and the best time to visit go into the months in more detail.

Flying or walking on the ice

A flight shows you the scale of the Tasman Glacier, about 27 kilometres long and the longest in New Zealand. If you want time on the ice, a heli-hike on the Tasman Glacier combines a short flight with about two hours walking in crampons. From the ground, the Tasman Glacier View Track climbs more than 300 steps to a lookout over the lake in 30 to 40 minutes return.

What travellers say about the ski plane and helicopter combo

4.7 (373 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ David Matthew (United States) · May 2026

The helicopter ride up to the Glacier was amazing. … Once we landed on the glacier we had an incredible view of the Glacier and the surrounding mountains. Then the ski plane ride back was also spectacular. The guides were very friendly and informative. …

★★★★★ Hua (Hong Kong) · September 2026

This glacier combo flight was the highlight of my mother’s retirement trip to New Zealand. … The pilots and on‑site staff were friendly and highly professional. They took wonderful photos for us and gave us informative commentary throughout the flight. …

★★★★★ Anirudh (United States) · January 2025

… I was amazed by the magnificent views of Tasman glacier. The part that could have been better was the helicopter ride. … I got a seat in the middle of the back row, which limited the views outside.

★★★★★ Colin (Australia) · July 2026

The flight was good, however it was disappointing that passengers did not change sides on return flight. Those that viewed Mt Cook when leaving also viewed it on the way back. …

★★★★★ Arvind (India) · May 2026

Waited two days because it kept on getting rescheduled. Finally was offered only ski plane ride and that too did not make the landing. …

Travellers who fly on a clear day describe the glacier landing and the switch of aircraft as the highlight. Weather often moves or shortens this flight, and the middle seat in the back of the helicopter has a limited view, so book early in your stay and check in early.

Questions travellers ask

Is a snow landing guaranteed?

No. The mountains around the Tasman Glacier hold snow and ice all year, but some summer landing sites are bare rock, and strong wind can cancel a landing altogether. The Glentanner flights describe their snow as seasonal.

Helicopter or ski plane?

A helicopter lands on smaller sites close to the peaks. The ski plane lands on the wide upper Tasman Glacier. The combination flight lets you try each aircraft on one trip.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The operators cancel and offer a later flight or a refund. Reviews mention waits of a day or two, so book your flight early in your stay.

Can children fly?

Yes. Glacier Helicopters gives children from 4 to 14 their own seat, and infants under 4 and under 15 kg sit on an adult’s lap. Other flights only say children must fly with an adult.

Can I bring a bag or a drone?

Several flights do not allow bags, drones or selfie sticks on board. Bring a camera you can hold in one hand and leave the rest in the car.
