Mount Cook itineraries for one to three days
One day covers the Hooker Valley and a lookout. Two days add a flight or a heli-hike and a night under the stars at Tekapo. With three, you have a spare day for the weather.

Most visits to Aoraki/Mount Cook combine the national park with the Mackenzie Basin around Lake Tekapo and Twizel. The park has the tracks, the glaciers and the flight bases. Tekapo, about 104 km away, has the stargazing tours, the hot pools and far drier weather. The plans below assume a car; where a shuttle or tour can replace it, we say so. Times are typical walking times from DOC, not targets.
One day in the national park
Start early at White Horse Hill car park, at the end of the Hooker Valley road. The Hooker Valley Track takes about three hours return, crosses three swing bridges and ends at Hooker Lake below Aoraki. In summer, Tourism New Zealand reports the track often full from December to February and the car park short of spaces from November to March, so a start before the crowds pays off. Toilets are 15 minutes past the second bridge.
After a break, drive about ten minutes to the Tasman Valley car park. The Tasman Glacier View Track climbs more than 300 steps in 30 to 40 minutes return to a view over the Tasman Lake, which did not exist before 1974. Between September and June you can swap the viewpoint for the lake itself: the Hermitage runs Glacier Explorers, a boat trip of about three hours among the icebergs with transport from the hotel, booked directly with the Hermitage. If you still have energy, the Kea Point Track from the village takes about two hours return and ends at a platform facing Mount Sefton and the Mueller Glacier lake. On a wet afternoon, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre covers the history of climbing in the region and is open into the evening in the current season.
Without a car, the shuttle day tour from Lake Tekapo follows almost the same route, with Peter's Lookout on the way in and a stop at Lake Pukaki on the way back.
Two days in the park and at Tekapo
Day one: walk the Hooker Valley in the morning, then fly in the afternoon or the next morning. The ski plane and helicopter combination from Mount Cook Airport takes 45 minutes and lands on the upper Tasman Glacier; check-in closes 45 minutes before the flight. Book the flight for early in your stay, because reviews often mention weather delays and rescheduling. For a longer time on the ice, the heli-hike leaves at 8:45 am or 10:45 am and lasts about three hours, so it fits the morning of the second day before the drive. The scenic flights and heli-hike pages compare the options.
Day two: drive out along Lake Pukaki. Peters Lookout on the lakeshore is one of the best places for a photo of Aoraki, and the Pūkaki Information Centre on State Highway 8 sells salmon from Mt Cook Alpine Salmon. In Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakeshore dates from 1935 and is a Category 1 historic place. In the evening, join a stargazing tour; the session by the Tekapo River lasts about 90 minutes and the Mount John summit tour about 1 hour 45 minutes, from age 10.
Three days with a spare
A third day turns the plan into something that survives bad weather. Use it as a buffer for a cancelled flight, or, on a clear day, climb the 2,200 steps to Sealy Tarns, three to four hours return with 600 m of height gain. At Tekapo, the Mt John Walkway around the lakeshore takes about three hours and starts next to Tekapo Springs, where a day pass for the hot pools lets you come and go until closing. In summer, the Mueller Hut is a further option for experienced walkers with an overnight stay; DOC requires bookings from 2 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, made on its Mueller Hut page.
Twizel, under an hour from the village, works as a base between the two. It has the nearest shop to the park and a stargazing tour with an astronomer. If you stay in the village instead, the Hermitage takes guests to its own star base near Mount Cook Airport for Big Sky Stargazing, all year and from age 8.

A winter version
In June the day is less than nine hours long, and on 21 June it rises at 08:14. Plan one main outing per day. The Hooker Valley Track can be walked, but DOC recommends microspikes and walking poles for the icy shaded sections, and the Sealy Tarns steps may need ice axe and crampons, so leave them out unless you have the gear and experience. Snow can close State Highway 80, so check the road each morning before driving in from Tekapo or Twizel.
Winter has its own advantages for this plan. Darkness falls soon after 17:45, so stargazing can start early in the evening, and the hot pools at Tekapo are a warm way to end the day. See the best time to visit for the month-by-month picture.
Arriving from Queenstown or Christchurch
From Queenstown the drive is about 258 km; from Christchurch Airport about 324 km, with Tekapo on the way. Coming from Christchurch, reverse the two-day plan and spend the first night in Tekapo. From Queenstown, start in the park and finish at Tekapo before continuing to Christchurch. The getting there page has the bus and shuttle options.

Questions travellers ask
How many days do I need at Mount Cook?
One full day is enough for the Hooker Valley Track and a short walk in the Tasman Valley. Two or three days let you add a flight or heli-hike and keep a spare day, which matters because the village averages around 14 rain days a month.
Can I visit Mount Cook as a day trip from Lake Tekapo?
Yes. The drive is about 104 km each way, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, and a shuttle day tour from Tekapo also covers the Hooker Valley Track. Spend the evening back in Tekapo for stargazing.
Should I stay in Mount Cook Village or Lake Tekapo?
Staying near the park puts you at the tracks early and close to the flight bases, while Tekapo has the stargazing tours, the hot pools and drier weather. Many plans combine a night in each, or use Twizel, under an hour away, as a middle point.
When should I book a scenic flight during my stay?
Early in your stay. Reviews of the glacier flights often mention weather delays and rescheduling, and a flight on the first day leaves the following days as a buffer.
Does a three-day plan work in winter?
Yes, with shorter walks and more time at Tekapo. In June there is less than nine hours of daylight, the Hooker Valley Track can be icy and snow can close State Highway 80, so check conditions each morning.
